Last evening I sat in my living room enjoying a glass of champagne with two very dear friends. As we chatted and laughed and cried, I was struck by the realization of how carelessly we discount our significance to one another. We dismiss the importance of our presence, our varied personalities, our gifts and talents and by doing so we rob others of consideration, ideation, hope, laughter, and abiding friendship.
To put it plainly, you and I are the bees of our ecosystems. Without bees, our entire food chain would disintegrate and the earth’s population would starve. And so it is in our “people bubbles”. Those in your circle—great or small— need your presence in their lives more than you will ever, ever realize. You sustain them, you energize them, you encourage them without even an inkling that you’re doing it.
If you’re like me, you do not want to think of yourself as important because that feels prideful. We dismiss our worth in exchange for humility. We say, “I’m not critical to anyone. I’m just me.” But I realized in the wee hours of the morning that’s wrong. I’m not just me. And neither are you. Dear friend, we are BEES.
So let me begin 2022 by thanking all the BEES in my life who awaken me to new ideas, who take me with them on their crazy life adventures, who encourage me to soldier on, and who challenge me to be better human being.
I wish you all a New Year of profound growth, peace, hope and joy and that in 2022 for the benefit of your own ecosystem, you will embrace being the BEE you were created to be.
